Returned with no casualties very little damage. Top turret & nose gun were damaged. |

Shot down over Sofia from intense fighter attacks in the tail end-Charlie formation slot. A 109 from six high ignited the starboard outside fuel tank as the B17 approached the IP. The plane swung out of formation with the wing afire and the crew was seen to bail out. |
